Midwest Fall Invaders: What They Are and How to Stop Them

As temperatures begin to drop across the Midwest, many insects start searching for warm, protected places to survive the winter. Unfortunately, homes and businesses provide the perfect shelter. These pests, commonly known as fall invaders, don’t typically reproduce indoors or cause structural damage, but they can become a major nuisance when they appear in large numbers inside your property.

Common Fall Invaders in the Midwest

Brown Marmorated Stink Bugs

These shield-shaped insects often gather on the south and west side of structures in the fall before squeezing into cracks and gaps. Inside, they can emit an unpleasant odor when disturbed and are often found around windows, ceilings, and light fixtures.

Boxelder Bugs

Recognized by their black bodies with orange-red markings, boxelder bugs commonly collect on the south and west side of structures, siding, and foundations. Once inside, they may stain surfaces and become a persistent annoyance throughout the winter months.

Asian Lady Beetles

While beneficial outdoors, Asian lady beetles can become a serious nuisance indoors. They tend to gather in large numbers, especially on the south and west side of structures and in upper levels of homes, and may bite or release a yellow defensive fluid that can stain walls and fabrics.

Cluster Flies

Cluster flies move indoors to overwinter in wall voids and attics after first congregating on the south and west side of structures. On warm winter days, they may suddenly emerge and gather around windows, creating a frustrating and unsanitary situation.

Overwintering Reproductive Wasps

In the fall, fertilized wasp queens search for protected areas like attics, soffits, and wall voids to overwinter, often entering from the south and west side of structures where heat exposure is greatest. While they are typically inactive during winter, they can emerge in spring and start new colonies if not properly addressed.

Why Professional Prevention Matters

The key to controlling fall invaders is prevention before they enter. Once inside wall voids, these pests can be difficult to eliminate completely without professional treatment. Proper exterior barrier applications, exclusion work, and targeted treatments help stop these insects before they become a problem.
